Job Title : RECREATION SPECIALIST (temporary)

Performs a variety of general administration duties as needed to organize, schedule and operate specific recreation programs.

Works under the general supervision of the Community Activities & Services Manager while in training or on a project by project basis.

May provide general supervision to various, seasonal, and volunteer personnel.

Assists with supervision of operation and activities of such programs as basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, softball, flag football, swimming pool, awesome adventures, special events and other events as assigned. Work hours will be scheduled by department manager based on program assignments.

Provides assistance with supervision over recreation activities and seasonal, temporary or volunteer personnel; conducts training as needed; may officiate or referee games or assist in coaching; maintains statistics for leagues and tournaments.

Assists in public relations by finding volunteer workers and presenting new programs to the general public; completes post program evaluations to assure effectiveness.

Assists Recreation Coordinator in planning and preparing a calendar of activities, advertising, establishing, organizing and managing the recreational needs of various groups or categories of participants.

Provides office coverage and telephone monitoring when required.

Performs related duties as required.


1. Education and Experience:

A. Graduation from high school or equivalent; plus two (2) years of academic or specialized training in recreation administration or youth recreation leadership;
B. Two (2) years of recreation program administration, physical education teaching, coaching or related experience;
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Some knowledge of the methods and techniques of developing and operating recreation programs; of the philosophy and objectives of community recreation programming; team sports management; community and public relations; rules and regulations of a variety of sports and recreational activities; of equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program; the operation of personal computers and various software applications including spread sheets, word processing, etc.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, various age groups, other organizations, and the public; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid state of Utah driver’s license
Required to supply own transportation.
Must possess required certifications for swimming pool assignments.

4. Work Environment:

Incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls, periodic exposure to outdoor conditions and weather extremes. Tasks require variety of physical activities, which may involve muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Communicating, i.e. talking, hearing and seeing essential to job effectiveness. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in normal course of job performance.
